Artist:King Midas Sound
Title:Cool Out EP [ inc. Dabrye & Flying Lotus remixes ]
Label:Hyperdub
King Midas Sound is Kevin 'The Bug' Martin and the angelically-voiced Roger Robinson, who first came together on The Bug's 2003 Rephlex LP 'Pressure'. With Martin taking a more blissed out, but equally deranged approach from that of his new epic Bug album 'London Zoo', the King Midas Sound is 21st Century jilted lovers rock. First surfacing on Kode9's Sonar mix from the summer of 2007, and heavily in demand ever since then, 'Cool Out' is finally getting the release we've all been holding our breath and turning purple for. If that wasn't enough, this EP also features two previews from the forthcoming King Midas Sound album, in the form of remixes by two producers known for sending their off-beats into orbit. Graced and defined by Roger's sweet, sweet vocals, 'Cool Out' is a hymn to the ever persistent ghosts and mutations of Jamaican sound system culture. The remixes of 'Lost' and 'One Ting' on the flipside take that same spirit into hip hop peripheries. Dabyre's rendition of 'One Ting' laces his funk with unexpected and shrill shards of early Detroit techno, while Flylo captures the essence of 'Lost' with a suicidal Japanese monologue and dysfunctional bleeps and crunches. Another tale of the unexpected from Hyperdub and taster of the forthcoming KMS album due later in 2008.
Artist:Breakestra
Title:Lowdown Stank / Miss Funky Sole
Label:Now-Again
The Breakestra's first release, the Deep Funk classic 'Getcho Soul Togetha' came out on Stones Throw. So it's fitting that they'd come around the bend to Now-Again for a release as the band readies to record a new album. The result, two new songs from Miles Tackett and crew, see release here in vocal and instrumental form. Mixmaster Wolf provides the vocals on the A-side 'Lowdown Stank', with two instrumental jams on the flip, all produced, recorded and mixed by Music Man Miles.
Artist:DJ DRM
Title:Bhuna Beats EP
Label:Bastard Jazz
Brooklyn's Bastard Jazz Recordings returns a bubblin' and eclectic 12" of tracks from label head DJ DRM. In true Bastard Jazz style, the Bhunabeats EP is an absolutle amalgamation of sounds, styles, and flavors - cross referencing ska, dub, bhangra, and latin funk into the modern sounds of downtempo, breakbeat, 2-step and broken flavors. Kicking things off with a heavy nod to Prince Buster is 'Blinger On' - a 120BPM ska floor filler that pushes its way into a big breakbeat with a squelchy analogue bassline complete with a melodica skank and classic Skatelites-esque trumpet solo - perfect for bringing those 60's vibes right into 2008! Up next is 'Maya's Dub' - a bass-quaking joint with big drums, delayed out skanks, horn stabs and bits of organ slinking into late-in-the-game Portugese male vox - smooth enough for the headphone set and bumpin' enough for some early side movements. Flipping the record over, 'Creature Comforts' is a deep, uptempo joint with late-night synths, fuzzy tribal percussion, deep bass and a re-worked two-step break that flips on it's head into a Broken sound mid-way through. Wrapping up the record is a remix of 'Vidambana' by Chico Mann, also known as Marquitos Garcia - guitarist for Afrobeat supergroup Antibalas and accomplished producer in his own right, having released a couple of killer albums and singles on Holland's Kindred Spirits label. His remix sticks right by his signature analogue afro/latin sound, incorporating the Indian elements of the original into a funky synth heavy rocker that defies categorization but gets ears perked up no doubt!
Artist:Revolt OP
Title:Screwdub / Yout Man
Label:Mode
Yet more wicked stuff on this label, home to previous releases from the likes of Komonazmuk, Tes La Rok and Djunya, as Revolt OP drops two hard destroyers in a bad boy dubstep style. Both drop the tempo and up the dread-count for a pair of heavy rockers that will add a chill atmosphere to any dance, and thats not in a chilout way. 'Screwdub' does it with spooky sub-bass tones, while 'Yout Man' lays thick the rastaman vibations.
Artist:Ikonika
Title:Millie / Direct
Label:Hyperdub
Ikonika's second release on Hyperdub sees her unleashing a bittersweet, unhinged, dancefloor assault that combines her disjointed beats and a both comic and sinister laughing bassline, with breezy synth chords that owe as much to the current swell of post-bump beats than anything else coming out of London right now. And all this named after her cat, 'Millie'. On the flip, 'Direct' takes it easier, opening with an accordion-like synth before a cascade of bleeps desends, and the swollen sub bass rises. Totally lush. Watch for the sublime switch in the middle of the track, the soundtrack to winding down the roof of your space cruiser, and donning shades as the sun reflects off Saturn. Deeply psychedelic off-beats from the queen of Hyperdub.
Artist:Radikal Guru
Title:Conspiracy / Subba Dub
Label:Dubbed Out

Artist:Moston & Malente
Title:Do The Right Thing
Label:Splank!
Moston & Malente return to Splank sending out a message to all the wrongdoer's and wrongdoing's in this world, encouraging moralistic and positive action amongst us all, with their new single 'Do The Right Thing'. 2 versions of an absolutely belter, which promises to further cement their position as purveyors of the very finest electronic dance music. Lars Moston has been hectic in the studio this year with sometime production partner Duncan Whiteley, honing their own original sound they've provided remixes for Fil OK and Daniel Dexter, whilst Malente has recently enjoyed a release on Exploited with the dancefloor bomb that is 'Hyperactive', as well as having releases lined up on 2 of the most discerning labels in dance music 'Fools Gold' and 'Southern Fried'. 'Do The Right Thing' has all the elements of a classic Moston & Malente production, an infectious hook, uplifting breakdowns and a vocal edit which adds a jacking groove to the proceedings. And just as an extra treat, there are 2 versions, one taking a more direct electro route, whilst on the alternative mix the bassline is twisted and wobbled to notch up the wonk factor. On remix duties, scene stalwarts Twocker step up first, adding squelchy bassline's, big room grooves and first class production, demonstrating why they possess such an esteemed profile. New kid on the block Clark Able shows why he's talk of the town with his version, dropping a completely original sound, going to work on the vocal, warped bass sounds and off-beat percussion.
Artist:Regal

Title:Ghost Licker
Label:Ground Level
Following his Ground Level debut with Groovy Moves (which has just gone for repress!), Luigi Barone returns with the House / Breaks hybrid monster which is Ghost Licker. The original is a funky electro number, with huge bass and the 'ghost' lick weaving throughout to create a monster. On the remix front Groove Allegiance turn it into a glitchy floor filler, already being supported by Malente.

Artist:Kontext
Title:Plumes / Blinkende Stjerne
Label:Immerse Records
"Plumes" follows, and adopts a machine funk meets deep house template. Frighteningly original, this track is a testament to the joys of fusion within electronic music and evokes memories of Detroit or Sheffield in their music heyday. Finally, Kontext rounds off the release with "Blinkende Stjerne" a walk into the extremely fertile techno-dubstep crossover territory which sidesteps cliche throughout to become a genuinely fascinating listen.
Artist:Kontext
Title:Falling To Weightlessness / Aeromonarchs Attacks
Label:Immerse Records
With no genre classification standing in his way, Kontext delivers four tracks of bass-led electronica for Immerse over 2 discs. Kicking things off is the beautiful "Falling To Weightlessness", a skittering melodious foray into the lighter side of what is known as dubstep. Still maintaining a slightly sinister edge, this track is the epitome of balance with music as it walks a tightrope of emotion. Next up is the incredibly detailed "Aeromonarchs Attack", an intricate yet minimalist view of machine led dub. Subtle clicks and atmostpherics ride atop an undulating broken groove to create an absorbing, consuming track which begs for re-listens.

Title:Hands Up
Label:Gene Pool

Artist:Kid Digital
Title:There For You
Label:Future Perfect Records
After a stormer of a debut, Future Perfect returns to the fold with this prime slice of electro-breakbeat beef from Russia's Kid Digital. Fusing together a squeaky acid-tinged synth, a thundering sub bass and a warm vocal riff in between monster beats - we have here a tune that devastates dancefloors without remission. We loved their work on Future Perfect 001 so much we've brought back Pro7 and Arrow!!! for remix duties. Pro7 delivers a cheeky electro-house interpretation that makes great use of the riff with pounding kick drums and skiptastic percussion. A grower that drops quickly into a naughty, rasping b-line while maintaining the understated funk of the original. The trademark glitchy edits, and huge percussive blasts are what make this one a winner! Arrow!!!'s take is something altogether more sinister and brooding. Drawing tiny fragments from the original and melding them to his own arsenal of blunted FX and cantankerous rhythms. This is a bomb! A huge tribal-sounding onslaught! Pierced with glitched-out one-shots of the original vocal and underpinned by skanking steel drums, the bassline twists and turns and morphs like a supernatural machine. Dark, moody and massive! Support from: Simian Mobile Disco, Groove Armada, Boys Noize, Tiga, Twockers, Blende, Tom Real, Rogue Element, Kid Blue, Janette Slack and many more.

Title:NHL
Label:Muto Records
Since their first release in 1998, Dublex Inc. always has been a dynamic system which is driven by four unified flavours. It's been a while since their last 12' in 2007 ('The Game feat. Ashley Slater'). Meanwhile they produced their second album which is due to be released in autumn 2008. NHL was supposed to be an album track but at last ended up with the Lounge Records & MUTO label group. Still producing distinctive 'Dublex-style' they're coming up with some dancefloor funk at its best so don't miss this one and check out the long player in autumn.
Artist:Unusual & Electric
Title:Stand On Up
Label:Zirkus
Unusual & Electric return for their fourth EP of 'chunky wobbly technoid disco'. With a solid pedigree behind them (They gave The Chemical Brothers their first London gigs) Unusual & Electric certainly know their onions when it comes to genre bending music. Taking the rather ignored 'Stand On Up' from the sample slinging Jay Stoner and adding some wooshy dubwise effects this should see some serious dancefloor action. Over on the flip Stoner returns the favour by spicing up 'Mr Palatino' with some phat horns and classic electro refrains. Feeling some love already from Rob Da Bank (Radio 1), Nimone (6 Music), Laurent Garnier, Coldcut , Ministry Radio...

Kidda fires the starting pistol with a funky uplifting hip hop mix followed by a riff-driven rework by Beathoven. Title:Lord/Block
Label:Alphabet Set
Donal and John have been producing music under this name for two years. Their live shows are driven by heavy bass and drums processed by a system of their own construction. Song structures, tempos and rhythms are improvised on the fly. This allows for reactive performances based on context; chaotic parties inform chaotic renditions of songs, quieter affairs see a quieter musical return. This double A side 10" from the Irish duo melds abrasive electronic polyrhythms onto a heavy sub bass that drives the tracks relentlessly,Lord feels epic, it builds tension from the opening bar and delivers an ending that will bring dance floors to meltdown. Block with its caustic synths and ultra tight drum programming is more subtle but just as heavy.
