Title:Uncertain / Vendetta
Label:Techtonic
Having recorded a number of excellent deep, soulful but hard hitting dubstep releases under his DJG monkier, San Francisco's Dean J. Grenier decided to move into fresher pastures this year, announcing his new alias as Grenier. Kicking off with a killer release on Photek Productions early on in 2012 - and not many artists aside from Photek himself can claim a plate on his highly respected imprint - Grenier takes a dark-jungle and classic dubstep inspired perspective on the currently favoured 128bpm / house tempo, and he now delivers a stunning 12" for Tectonic in the process. 'Uncertain' featured on Tectonic label boss Pinch's acclaimed 'Fabriclive' mix earlier this year and has been highly requested ever since. Tough bass stabs punch in the intro before wheeling backwards and slamming into a hard, almost 4/4 rhythm, fully charged with a weighted sub. The track devleops with jazzy references and sonic flashes of musicality, almost reminicent of early Peshay and Metalheadz. It is, by any measure, a killer tune. On the flip, 'Vendetta' sticks again with the 128bpm tempo but takes a heavy dark wobble sound, a-la Skream circa 2006, and moulds it around a stepping 4/4 rhythm. This makes for a simple and effective rhythmical weapon of choice that encapsulates much of what made early dubstep so interesting, reincarnated here at the slower housey tempo.
Artist:Distal / HxdB
Title:Booyant / Amphibian
Label:Techtonic
Atlanta producer Distal teams up with Vancouver's HxdB for 'Booyant', an absolutely killer collaboration that fuses the best elements of both producers in fine style. Taking a 136bpm tempo and bridging dubstep with a cutting edge bass-heavy house vibe, the duo pull together an intimate dancefloor bubbler that fans of Night Slugs and Swamp 81 will most likely feel quite at home with. Awash with lush synths and gurgling sound bytes, 'Booyant' is a quality track to tickle many a fancy. Flip to Side AA for Distal's solo effort 'Amphibian', an excellent piece of 140bpm machine music, whirring and clicking in a roughly similar vein to Instra:mental's 'Rift Zone'. Experimental dubstep pressure for the open minded, guaranteed future-proof. Distal will release his debut album 'Civilization' on Tectonic later in the spring of 2012.

Artist:Distance
Title:Reboot / Bazurk
Label:Techtonic
As one of the original pioneering forces in dubstep, Distance has unleashed a series of hard-hitting, no compromise singles over the last seven years, and two highly-acclaimed albums on the respected electronica imprint Planet Mu; 'My Demons' and more recently, 'Repercussions'. 2011 saw Distance release a single with major label Island Records ('Falling') as well as delivering a precision mix for the esteemed Tempa 'Dubstep All Stars' DJ mix series. Taking a rare excursion away from releasing on his own excellent Chestplate Recordings, Tectonic is very happy to welcome Distance back for this fine release. Restrained but ruff-nek and most definitely ready for action, 'Reboot' has been tearing up clubs over the latter part of 2011. Chiming in with a riff that sounds like a demented modem being fed through a hungry distortion pedal, Distance builds the tension all the way to the drop... then in come the Distance subs - perfectly formed and totally powerful - charging the rhythm with a deadly purpose. Big support from Youngsta, Mala, Pinch and many more has already been forthcoming for this leading track.Inverting the wax reveals the devastating 'Bazurk'. Swinging into action with a chattering, wonky hi-hat line, this drop-hammer beast soon mutates into its full form, ripping the clothing from its chest and letting out a deafening metallic roar! Korn may well be widely claiming to be "experimenting" with dubstep a-la Skrillex, but in one resting heartbeat 'Bazurk' makes their efforts sound like music for easily scared little girls.
Artist:Author
Title:The City / Teacher
Label:Techtonic
Author's first single is set to land just ahead of their November-slated debut LP for Tectonic. Listeners can expect deep melodic music with real instrumentation and - most importantly - no pretension. A tough combination to deliver effectively, yet Author do so with consumate ease. So who or what is Author? A new name on the scene, no doubt, yet the producer duo that constitutes Author are certainly no newbies in their own right. Ryan Gath aka Jack Sparrow has a slew of deep-dubstep dancefloor killers under his belt, as well as the jaw-dropping 2010 'Cicadian' album on Tectonic. Alongside Sparrow is fellow Leeds based beat-sculpter, long standing friend and producer Dom Howard, known for his Ruckspin dubstep production monkier as well as being a key member and producer for the live dubstep super-group Submotion Orchestra. 'The City' is a strong, energetic future-garage riddim packed with depth, subtlety and laden with plenty of dancefloor savvy. The opening strings and city soundscapes set a restrained but tense and melancholic atmosperic context. Almost from nowhere the heavy beats and bass combo drops, delivering hard, rolling garage drums and warp-speed bassline. Full of intricate shuffle and dynamic energy, 'The City' is a killer track all round. Flip for 'Teacher', which expertly captures the essence of the original 2004-2005 dubstep vibe while updating the sonic palette and production levels for 2011. Heavy sub-fuelled bass pummels underneath choppy dubbed out hits and broken tribal drums. Simply quality.
Artist:Jakes / Darqwan
Title:Time Ends / JahWan
Label:Techtonic
Two big names share one plate for Tectonic as dark garage/2-step legend Oris Jay, appearing here as Darqwan, goes face-to-face with Bristol don and Hench head-honcho Jakes. Both tracks roll it out cold and hard with a no-compromise attitude and all the quality levels you've come to expect from the usual Tectonic output. Massive plate.
