Artist:The Village Orchestra
Title:The Dark Is Rising EP
Label:Stuffrecords
With the lines between dubstep, techno, house and hip-hop becoming more blurred by the day, Stuffrecords unleashes another new EP that occupies this netherground but still sounds uniquely Stuff. The Village Orchestra is the techno nom de plume of Ruaridh Law, one third of The Marcia Blaine School Girls. This EP reflects his DJ sets, a complex melange of broken techno, dubstep, and Detroit intellectualism. 'Dwyer' sums this up perfectly, drawing heavily on the spirit of old skool hardcore with its classic bassline and rave breaks falling in and out of the mix. 'Dwyer Bonus Beats' straightens it out for the DJ but still keeps the rough-edged spirit of the original intact. Dubstep man of the moment 2562 was an ideal choice for the refix of 'Afanc' - a spacious beast, half dubstep and half Chain Reaction opiate house. It segues perfectly into the final track 'Tober', an epic slice of Detroit-inspired goodness. Already supported by Mary Anne Hobbs, Martyn, Surgeon, and Mark Pritchard; it's mint!
