Thelem - Lucid Dream / 12"
Orientis Records is a 2011-born label setting out to introduce new deeper and emotive dimensions to dubstep and other bass musics, by working with artists already breaking the surface, and seeking out underplayed talents that deserve the limelight. Hampshire-based producer Thelem may seem like a new kid on the block for some, but for others he's already becoming well established in the scene, known for striving to bring dubstep back to it's deeper, darker minimal roots. He founded Orientis Records to revive those sometimes forgotten sounds of the not-so-distant past with a new twist, and his latest creations on this EP recall the vintage styles of producers like Loefah, Distance, and DMZ, yet brought forward in time with Thelem's own spin and tough bite. 'Lucid Dream' builds suspense with sustained horror strings and spacious experimental beats, dropping with a lethal sub guaranteed to rattle your chest. The whole thing rolls along intertwined with creepy old style sci-fi atmospherics and pads, every sound engineered with true precision. 'Drones' introduces itself with the most chilling, ghostly echoes, then leaves you just enough time to catch your breath before unleashing the darkest pulsating sub, with a synth that groans pure despair, as if the sound itself is tortured. 'Pinar' stomps along like the overweight monster it is. Featuring an LFO-filtered bassline with distorted 808s, but discarding the midrange wobble. This terror guarantees to bring the bouncing sub back into dubsteppers lives and get the dance floor moving.
