Description of Hoodz Bad Mind / Clash

Awash with echoing dub effects and deejay shouts, 'Bad Mind' fights a running three-way battle between rattling percussion, huge rolling sub-bass, and a righteous steppah swing. Flipside 'Clash' is another dark destroyer, first heard on 'Analog Clash' and now here on vinyl for the first time. Warrior-Charging horns establish a dread landscape across which pummeling bass, minimal beats, and spaced-out effects make for a superheavyweight rootical groove. The bigger they come, the harder they drop, and you won't find too many larger than these Hoodz.

The first of a string of new releases for the early part of the year from the always erudite and adventurous LoDubs, this 12" guns the engine with a bit of hybrid action, and marks the return of Toronto's own Bombaman. As with his refixing of Solvent's 'Think Like Us', the first release on the bespoke LoDubs Special Request imprint last year, the styles touched upon here are instantly relevant, and at the same time offer a new and alternative sonic combination. Taking source material from Toronto synth/disco/house production and DJ duo Syntonics, 'Material' opens up with a mighty, shuffling piece of genius, towed forward by a monstrous, oozing bassline. However, the backing rhythm and its stilted shuffling cacophany of drums may remind many of something more in the backyard of DJ Assault crossed with Herbert on a caffeinated day, rather than the 4-beat dubstep son du jour. If you really have to, call it Funky and make it a stepping-stone across the ever-decreasing gap over which dubstep and bassline stares longingly at b-more club and fidgety house sounds. Completing a perfect pair, another Syntonics remix 'Rock Tonight' arrives at lower velocity but arguably more aggressively, following an open drum signature which allows for a high-meets-low frequency interplay that when properly amplified almost seems to make the air wiggle in front of your face, like a hot day in Arizona. Yes, it wobbles, but like the Earth's crust does after faultline displacement.

Placed among the top strata of bass music practitioners in San Francisco, Djunya's growing outernational repute, fuelled by previous outings on Mode, Narco.Hz and Eight FX, is primed to flare up with the release of his contribution to the ever-expanding collection of free radicals that is the LoDubs wax catalogue. 'Elevate' is a sprawling gem of a track, which manages to run with a certain ferocity without being derivitive, carrying its weight above a chassis of pronounced yet un-heavy-handed funky driving breakstep. By adding what is natural to such realms, principally thick layers of keys and rolling bass threads with a purely optimistic feel, 'Elevate' seems to conjure up a largely hidden aspect of the spectrum of dubstep, with a lightness of decorative touch and hazily sun-drenched atmosphere that places it in similar orbit to LD's ambitious 'Traumatic Times', just around the corner on Hyperdub. With all elements of 'Elevate' so perfectly matched, finding an emulatory partner for the flipside would be an exercise in futility, so an alternative view of Djunya's soundworld is offered by the beautiful piece of subterranean ambience known as 'Puja Karna Sangit'. No less evocative in its own way, it expands and disperses like an indirect answer to the question of what Muslimgauze might be creating today in response the new movements in low end psychedelia, with Skull Disco-influenced percussive currents seeming somehow to pulse half-hidden beneath the waves of bass, like the detailed movements of single fish within the shoal's vast rolling morphing mass.

Austria's El Rakkas are the latest outernational production team (or person... we just don't know) to be drawn down from bass music's globe-spanning jet streamby the ever-searching LoDubs, and once again followers of the 'ardkore continuumhave much reason to be grateful for their efforts in exposing another hot pocket of heavy creation. As could reasonably be expected, based on the dub-reflective electronic sounds of other neighbouring regions, the El Rakkas style is laden with a mystery and depth which seems to channel a kind of collectively-embedded Northern European dub impulse, with a thickness to their output that is simply overwhelming. Displaying sonic kinship with the same open Berliner techno influence which pervades the likes of Spatial, Appleblim, T++, or Ike Release, 'Seas Of Disease' leaves first impressions that demurely cloak it's true potential. First aired last year as a digital-only release on the Graz-based netlabel Luv, the clicking garage rhythms, complex syncopated half-half-step beat and decaying stabs initially suggest an atmospheric trip into low-lit mental corners, but once properly amplified, the lurking seismic bass undercurrents rise to fill every crevice with a geseous low end, bubbling like sub-strata steam escaping through hot spring mud. Allied to those cyclic mid-range patterns, and with a forward dynamic built as much on subtracting layers as adding them, the sheer voluminous quality of 'Seas Of Disease' has a magnetic effect that will always draw bodies to the heart of the dance like a super-dense dark star. On the flip, 'I & I' aligns with the Rhythm & Sound / Burial Mix school of JA subsonics, gently unfolding over six minutes of deep rooted bass, sweet drifting vocal clouds, and a kick & snare combo vast enough with full power behind it to stun birds in flight. It may be a woefully abused word in music writing, but in the case of El Rakkas, "awesome" is not out of place.

We are in the midst of a great change, both of our world, and the way we live in it. As with the seasons, these shifts are gradual, but little by little they become part of the present. The dubstep and bass sound continues to experience a parallel state of flux : of this evolution, the forms are many, and widely expressive, but none of the many new voices and styles are quite like Clubroot. A St. Alban's resident, Clubroot cut his teeth in the early part of this decade with material bearing a likeness to the futurist ideals of drum and bass producers like Optical, Ed Rush, and Nico. As dubstep began to develop its own musical language, its emerging low end sonic tropes and freedom from rhythmic clutter acted as the catalyst for Clubroot, the moment when he realized what was upon him and was instinctually galvanized into action. His epic debut album is unlike any other yet released in the wider context of dubstep, eschewing high impact rhythmic constructions and muscular bass dynamics in favour of rolling grandeur and elaborately-realised emotive scenes, as thematically profound and vast in conception as it is uniquely expressive. 140 bpm tempos and lurching club-tooled sequences are not part of the Clubroot modus operandum : instead we encounter massive bass vistas, intricate garage-influenced spiralling beats, evocative melodic narratives that unwind to reveal fascinating bright flowers and surges of liquid colour, and a sense of stately beauty rarely encountered in electronic music. Like a map of an undiscovered audio landscape, these 10 tracks illustrate a collection of distinct environments which collectively create a whole set of shared senses, their seemingly otherworldly qualities primed to generate vivid emotional responses to be deeply embedded in the memory. Clubroot's irresistable siren pull is already winning over fans among the few who have already been exposed to his expansive gathering clouds of sound. Mary Anne Hobbs was quick to commission a mix for her world-renowned Radio 1 show, and will include Clubroot on her next Planet Mu compilation. Meanwhile, word spreading like a looming thunderstorm across the forums and blogs has generated huge anticipation among forward-thinking bass music fans, clamouring for the release of this view into the future.

Lo Dubs continues to document the dubstep sound of South America with this new 12" from Venezuela's Cardopusher, an artist well known and highly regarded within many subgenres of electronic bass music. An aggressive slice of break-fuelled mechanoid dub-funk, 'Milk Thistle' was first unveiled on the LoDubs 'Analog Clash' CD, sparking much interest in the artist, and curiousity across the forums as to when the tune would be cut and pressed on vinyl. That would be now, then. On equal footing with regards to stylistic ingenuity and power are b-side 'Double Dragon' and extra track 'Jerk Pork'. The first is remarkably catchy with high pitched arpeggiated melody (seemingly hijacked from an early YMO tune) and punchy, distinct bassline, and the latter a truly original and energizing rhythmic wobbler, built around skanking guitar and an uptempo digital dancehall bassline, with strangely incongruous oriental melodic motifs. Once again, the charge is on and Lo Dubs is leading it.

Austrian production duo El Rakkas make a sound that floats somewhere in the space between Rhythm And Sound, and the more deeply atmospheric end of the dubstep spectrum. However, to suggest that these boys are more about headphone burn than dancefloor glow would be to do them a glib dis-service, as anyone who has pushed their previous LoDubs 12" through a proper soundsystem can verify. The original mystical versions of these tracks first appeared in July '09, and now those elements have been bathed in the scrutiny of two dons of bass, LV and XI, with a sensibility that shows a pretanatural understanding of the individual songs inherent traits. LV's long association with Hyperdub goes back to 2007 and the righteous 'Globetrotting' 12, through summer 08's hit-that-never-was 'CCTV', right up to the yearning 'Turn Away', easily one of the best tracks on the label's 'Five Years' collection. Their re-rub of 'Seas Of Disease' injects a punchy (nearly) four-on-the-floor kick drum and driving swing, with distinctive crackles and effects in abundance, defining what could be the touchstone of a newly-emergent familia-bassus, should some wastrel blogger decide to give it a pithy name. Conversely, and in pure ying to LV's yang, Toronto dance master and LoDubs veteran XI presents a monster fix of 'I & I' with muted drums, rich sub-bass tones, and clipped rhythmic edits which add a propulsive energy to the original's dreamtime aura. Sticking steadfast to his don't-throw-everything-at-the-wall version style, the raw power in his remix comes from an "anti-wobble" technique, an ingeniously applied bassline full of subharmonic sweeps, bleeps, and creeps that similarly demands a classification of its own. One of the great aspects of the endlessly varying bass music soundwave is the way it seems able, even compelled, to fuse antecedant styles and genres to itself. In the most innovative hands, influences from last month are absorbed and reworked as smoothly as those from last century, and creativity sparks brightest when the marriage of form and function takes place beyond recognised boundaries... and it's from that unrestricted zone that UK producer O-Dessa emerges. Opening with an initial resemblance in sound to the same plaintive blue air of Burial, as these tracks resonate deeper in the mind, it becomes clear that this sonic affinity is merely a veil beneath which a new heart beats. The rhythms lurking below the bassline in 'Deeper' are like some undiscovered amalgam of old skool hardcore and something you might hear on the latest dirty south mixtape, which somehow manage to defy sense and co-exist in a driving and breathtaking way. Mournful mariachi horns and a plunging dub bassline intermingle in a desolate approximation of Sergio Leone's western soundtracks, while reedy flutes and distant female voices build a swirling vapour through which skittering woodblocks and metallic ticks raise an anxious sense of motion. Anchored by a vast, cone-melting sub-bass undertow, 'Deeper' s treasures are buried well below the surface. The juxtapositional subtle-tear-out nature of O-Dessa's production is even more apparent in 'Million Dollarz', which reveals itself in stages to be a gradual descent into layers of tweaked amen breaks, but with a grandeur unlike anything previously heard, even though that drum pattern has already been chopped countless ways over the years. It's not until midway through its five-and-a-half minutes that the famous phased snares rise from the dense banks of atmospherics, but when they do, a moment of blurred euphoria hits and the tune bursts into colourful life. This 12" is the first broadcast of many more to come from O-Dessa, as - like many have in their own way before and still more strive to do so now - he embarks on his individual journey in the continual reinvention of bass music. Instant thrill junkies won't find their fix in these grooves, but followers of the path less travelled will recognise many signs pointing the way to a rich future.

Strangely enough, if you want to get a headful of much of the bass music currently coming out of Venezuela, you have to go to Japan, and the primary source once there would be Tokyo's Murder Channel, a long running club night which has played host to artists as diverse as Melt Banana to Goth Trad, and also a label. Amongst the other releases featuring Venezuelan artists appearing in the last couple of years, such as Cardopusher's album 'Unity Means Power', came the Pacheko/DJ 100mado collaboration CD, which was released at the back end of 2009. LoDubs, having a long running relationship with both the VZ and JP cultures, has taken up the charge to spread a bit of this material to the rest of the planet. Pacheko's 'Figure 8' is the quintessential builder, with percussion quite stiff and pronounced, and bass weight to challenge any soundsystem, but the melody and rhythm married to these elements are remarkably light, full of interplay ... even elegant, in a way all their own. In ccontrast, 'Trance 8' from DJ 100mado, while not a complete departure, gives a suggestion of where the anthemic sound of dubstep could go in years to come, riding on an almost overwhelming arpeggiated melody, with dry snares that play cadence to the progression, and a throbbing underbelly of sub that lets loose like an invisible wobble beneath it all. The bonus CDEP accompanying this 12-inch - as is now the generous habit for the always-more-props-due LoDubs - features both vinyl cuts, plus Pacheko's 'Lockdown' remixed by DJ 100mado, and Pacheko & Cardopusher's rebuild of DJ 100mado's 'Side Life'.
